foreword

This open letter poem is dedicated to my father, who passed away on August 8, 2018 in Seoul, South Korea at 68 years old. He is buried alongside my paternal aunts, uncles, and grandparents in a family burial ground in the hills of Goyang, a city north of Seoul.
The featured image accompanying this post is a photograph that miraculously survived my mother’s rage— of my sister, an unidentified white man, appa, and me— somewhere in Scotland in the early 90s. We were in the middle of a big Europe vacation thanks to my maternal grandfather’s untimely early death.
Now I’ve tasted the bitterness of life on my own terms,
And learned which people and situations to avoid.
My biggest regret is not being able to show you
this vibrant side of me while you were still alive.
Thank you.
I’m sorry.
I love you.
Respectfully Yours,
Your Second Daughter Eunhee
